A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS(Book Review) - SHAZA NOUREEN P.M.K

 A Thousand Splendid Suns

I cry easily when l watch films. But I don't usually cry when I read books. There were times when my heart wept, but not eyes. This book was the first exception. I sincerely went to write a review but it is hard since the book is a great one and my words won't do justice to it.

To brief a bit, this is the story of two Afghan women and their miseries. Through their lives we could see war, poverty, starvation, loss, love, atonement, pride, patriarchy, misogyny, extremism, hope, contempt, hurted, brutality and a lot more. The childhood tortures of Mariam and the severe miseries come after marrying a brutal man named Rasheed are really painful to read. The other woman Laila, who has a generation gap with Mariam lived a better life untill the war took her everything. Both of them suffered hell on earth when the Taliban came for Afighanistan, precisely Kabul. So this basically is the story of their falls and rises. Also the 30 years history of Afghanistan which once treated women with the utmost scorn.

The author of the book Khaled Hosseini, the one from Afghanistan and who knew the pulse of Kabul, has beautifully written every single line in this book. He does wonders with words. He touches hearts. He influences emotions.
